Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area | VICKERY CREEK DIRECTIONS

VICKERY CREEK UNIT OF CHATTAHOOCHEE RIVER NATIONAL RECREATION AREA

Vickery Creek Unit Main Page

Northern Section

Parking for the northern section of Vickery Creek is off of Riverside Road. The parking lot is large, as this is the main section of the unit. An National Park Service sign is at the entrance.

Southern Section

The southern section off of South Atlanta Street is not marked with a National Park Service entrance sign as is the northern section, so if you are coming from Roswell, be on the lookout for a left turn not too far from the traffic light at the intersection of South Atlanta Street and Riverside Road. If coming from Riverside Road, the park is the first right on South Atlanta Street.

Old Mill Park/Covered Bridge

Another entrance to Vickery Creek is through a downtown Roswell City park known as Old Mill Park (aka Roswell Mill). There is a covered bridge and an old mill, neither of them on National Park Service property, but if you cross the covered bridge over Big Creek (aka Vickery Creek) and hike up the steep trail, you will find yourself in the middle section of the Vickery Creek Unit just below the Vickery Creek Dam. There is plenty of parking. When you turn down Mill Street, follow the signs to the “Covered Bridge.”

Trailhead on Grimes Bridge Road

There is a trailhead on Grimes Bridge Road at its intersection with Shadowbrook Drive. However, there is no parking here. You would have to park at the curb in the neighborhood that Shadowbrook Drive runs into. There is no reason whatsoever to enter here unless you live in the neighborhood and can walk to the trailhead.

Oxbo Road Entrance

A Roswell city trail known as the Historic Roswell Trail actually runs through the northern section of the Vickery Creek unit. Hikers on the trail cross over Big Creek and into the Vickery Creek unit via a bridge on Oxbo Road. However, there is no parking at the bridge. You either have to travel up Dobbs Road to a parking lot about a quarter mile away or park in a gravel lot along Oxbo Road also about a quarter mile away. Thus, the only reason to use this entrance is if you are hiking the Historic Roswell Trail.
