Visitors to the Five Forks Battlefield unit of Petersburg National Battlefield can learn about the April 1, 1865, battle on a five-stop driving tour. The park brochure available at the Eastern Front Visitor Center has a map and basic information about each stop. The stops are not in geographical order, so you must backtrack a few times if you want to visit them in numerical order. Furthermore, except for a cannon at one of the stops, there are no remnants of battlefield earthworks, historic houses, or anything else from the battle. All you will find are wayside exhibits that give a synopsis of the events that took place at Five Forks. The tour should take no longer than an hour to complete.
National Park Planner has created a virtual tour of the Five Forks battlefield complete with plenty of photos of what you will see at each tour stop. Feel free to use this as an additional source of information as you drive around the battlefield. At the bottom of each tour stop page is a navigation menu that allows you to jump to the next or previous stop.
Stop 1: Union Cavalry Attacks
Stop 2: The Angle
Stop 3: Five Forks Intersection
Stop 4: The Final Stand
Stop 5: Crawford’s Sweep
