Picnic tables are located at various places on the grounds of Steamtown National Historic Site. There are a dozen tables on the plaza in front of the roundhouse where the park’s museums and visitor center are also located. There are two other areas with a half dozen tables each next to the wooded area on the east side of the parking lot and roundhouse. There are no grills, and all tables are taken on a first come, first served basis.
Train museums are often of big interest to kids, and holding a birthday party is common at private museums. Steamtown National Historic Site is also open to hosting group picnics, but only if a visit to the park is part of the event (i. e. group members are going on train rides or visiting the museums as well). However, depending on your group size you may need a permit. If interested, call the park at (570) 445-1898. If you do host an event, the picnic area along the woods next to the roundhouse is the best place to do it.
