A sweeping view awaits visitors to the Wilson Creek Valley View stop on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This would be spectacular in the fall, but at other times you will be looking at nothing but tree-covered mountains, which isn’t that interesting. To make matters worse, during my October visit the smog was so bad that I rarely got a decent photo during my entire ten-day trip up the Parkway. Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway are two of the most polluted National Parks on the east coast.

If you want to see something a little more impressive, walk out to the Blue Ridge Parkway and go down the road until you get around the corner. Here you have an excellent view of Grandfather Mountain, which is now part of Grandfather Mountain State Park. You will see this mountain at many more overlooks as you make your way south (if that’s the way you are traveling).
