Trails: Mountains to Sea Trail and Big Butt Trail
Picnic Tables: None
There is no longer a view at the Walker Knob Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway, but you can access the Mountains to Sea Trail and the Big Butt Trail from here. The Mountains to Sea Trail is a 1,150-mile trail that stretches from Great Smoky Mountains National Park to the North Carolina Outer Banks. It is not part of the National Park system, so I did not hike or review it, but you can get information on the Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail website. One trailhead is in the parking lot and the other is directly across the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The Big Butt Trail leads to a mountain called Big Butt three miles away, and if you continue another three miles beyond the peak you will end up at NC Highway 197. This trail is managed by the U. S. Forest Service and is mainly on Forest Service property, not National Park Service property.
With a few exceptions, use of any photograph on the National Park Planner website requires a paid Royalty Free Editorial Use License or Commercial Use License. See the Photo Usage page for details.
