Trails: Rock Castle Gorge Trail
Picnic Tables: None
The Rock Castle Gorge Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway affords excellent 120° views into its namesake gorge. This is pretty much the same view as you get at the Twelve O’Clock Knob Overlook less than a half mile to the south, so no need to stop at both.
Rock Castle Gorge was created over millions of years by the erosion into the mountains by Rock Castle Creek. The gorge got its name from the colorless quartz crystals found in the area. Original settlers thought they looked like castles made of rock.
You can also pick up the Rock Castle Gorge Trail from here. For details on the trails in the area, visit the Rocky Knob Hiking Trails web page.
There are no picnic tables at this stop, but the Rocky Knob Picnic Area is located just across the Blue Ridge Parkway. You can walk to it from the overlook, but it is easier to drive a quarter mile farther south to access the picnic area parking lot.
