Poages Mill Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway gets its name from a late 1800s mill owned by Elijah Poage (the mill no longer exists). It is one in a series of three back-to-back overlooks within one mile of each other, all facing in the same direction. I guess that gives you three shots at possibly seeing something, which is good because you won’t see much here. You can catch a glimpse of Roanoke Valley and the surrounding mountains from either end of the parking area, but this overlook is 80 percent overgrown. The edge of the property drops straight off a cliff, yet the trees are so tall that they have grown up from below to block the view.
