Trails: Onion Mountain Loop Trail
Picnic Tables: 1 (no grill)
The sign in the parking lot at Onion Mountain Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway makes it sound as if you have to hike a trail in order to get to the scenic overlook, but it’s actually just a sign stating the overlook name on the upper portion and directing you to a trail on the lower portion. The only view is the one from the parking lot. The trail just runs through the woods and ends up looping around to a neat rock formation that you can climb up on. Since you can also get to the rock right from the parking lot, there is no need to hike the .1-mile trail other than to stretch your legs.
While you can get a view from on top of the rock, in truth, it’s no better than what you get from the parking lot. In fact, a photo with the rock in the frame is the best shot you can get.
There is one picnic table at the Onion Mountain Overlook that has a nice view of the mountains and valley.
