Head Foremost Mountain is so close to the overlook that you could hit a golf ball to it. Unfortunately, the closeness, along with the fact that it run parallel to the viewing area and provides no depth, doesn’t make for an interesting vista.
A wayside exhibit in the parking lot discusses Tulip Trees, aka Poplars. These trees are some of the tallest in the eastern United States. They are also the straightest and fastest growing trees in the forests of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and for that reason they were a favorite of the logging companies. They used to grow all over the United States and Europe but are now only found on the east coast and in China (where somebody is probably paying the Chinese to grow them for the U. S. so we can import them later).
In the panorama below, Flat Top Mountain can be seen on the right.
