Harveys Knob Overlook is one in a series of overlooks that are within a few miles of each other on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Here the subject of the vista is a valley, so those seeking mountains may find it bland. The main draw to the overlook is to see hawks as they migrate through the Blue Ridge Mountains each September, and during this time you are likely to find the parking lot full of bird watchers. A wayside exhibit on hawks is located at the parking area. This overlook faces northwest, so photos are best taken in the morning unless you are here for the sunset.
The northern trailhead for the Appalachian Trail is located at the north end of the parking lot. The southern trailhead is directly across the Blue Ridge Parkway.
