The Green Knob Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway is V-shaped. However, the point of the V, which sticks the farthest out into the valley and should be the best vantage point at the overlook, is now completely overgrown, so the only views are from the two sides of the V. This is a potentially spectacular view that has been relegated to mediocrity by unfettered vegetation growth.
The best view is from the north side of the parking lot where the overlook identification sign is located. The south side view is much narrower. For the best photos, visit in the afternoon and not in the morning.
The Lost Cove Ridge Trail begins just north of Green Knob Overlook, though the trailhead is nearly impossible to see when driving. To find it, when parked at the overlook, walk back out to the Blue Ridge Parkway and take a right (north). The trailhead is about a tenth of a mile down the road on the opposite side of the Parkway. It starts off straight up the mountain and leads to the top of Green Knob in only .6 mile, though the trail continues for another 2.7 miles beyond the summit. Supposedly a lookout tower is at the top of Green Knob, but if so, it cannot be seen from the parking area.
