The Big Ridge Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway offers a nice view, full of depth, with mountains of various sizes stacked up in rows one after another. I normally don’t care for views that are nothing but mountains with no pastoral valley as part of the scene, but for some reason this one struck me as a little more than typical. Arriving in the late afternoon, the sun cut across the vista from the side, lighting it wonderfully as shown in the panoramic view below.

Hikers can access the Mountains to Sea / Shut-In Trail from here. One trailhead is on the right side of the parking lot if you are looking at the mountains, and the second is a directly across the Blue Ridge Parkway.
