There are many excellent overlooks starting at Cowee Mountain (MP 430.7) and continuing north for about five miles until Courthouse Valley Overlook (MP 423.5), but all are located on the other side of the Blue Ridge Parkway from the Beartrap Gap Overlook. On this side, the mountains tend to run too close and flush to the viewing area, appearing more as cardboard cutouts of gradually fading facades than interesting scenery. To top that off, at Beartrap Gap trees block much of the view. I usually complain about this, but here, who cares? Trees or no trees, there simply isn’t anything worth seeing. Stop here only if you need a picnic table.
