The intended view at Beartrail Ridge Overlook is completely overgrown, but if you look back across the Blue Ridge Parkway there is a wonderful, non-obstructed view of the mountains and valley, including a small town. For the best photos, walk across the Parkway instead of standing in the parking lot. The shoulder of the road is quite wide, so it’s not like you will be a couple of feet from oncoming traffic. The National Park Service knows where the best view is and has opted to keep it clear by trimming back the weeds on this side. It just goes to show that the best views on the Parkway are rarely at the official overlooks. In fact, the best views in many cases are the ones you get as you drive along Parkway.
