The Basin Cove Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway marks the southern end of the Doughton Park Recreation Area. The overlook is pretty much overgrown with vegetation, but you can still catch a glimpse of the mountains through gaps in the trees.

The Basin Cove Overlook serves as a parking area for three trails. This is the southern terminus for the Bluff Mountain Trail, a 7.5-mile one-way trail that follows the Blue Ridge Parkway between here and Brinegar Cabin at the north end. The Flat Rock Ridge Trail begins here as well. This trail runs 5 miles one-way into the valley below. For more information on these and other trails in the area, check out the Doughton Park Hiking Trails web page.

You can also pick up the Mountains to Sea Trail, a trail that runs from Great Smoky Mountains National Park to the North Carolina Outer Banks. Information on this trail can be found at the Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail website.
