Julian Price made his fortune in the insurance business, helping to build the Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company into the largest life insurance company in North Carolina during the early part of the 1900s, and one of the largest in the country by the time he died in an automobile accident in 1946. Price served as the company’s president from 1919 and continued in that position until shortly before his death. Jefferson-Pilot Life Insurance Company, as it was called after a 1987 merger, remained in business until being bought out by Lincoln National Corporation in 2006.
Price purchased the land now called Julian Price Park for his own recreational use, though he allowed company employees to use the land. When he died, his children donated the land to the National Park Service. The 4,200-acre park consists of hiking trails, a picnic area, lake, and campground.
