Trails: John Rock Trail
Picnic Tables: 1
There is nothing to see at John Rock View on the Blue Ridge Parkway, but there is a trail that heads into the woods, the .2-mile round-trip John Rock Trail. It follows a ridge and goes much farther than the stated distance. I later learned that the pullout was named after a rock on which a horse named John fell to its death, so I must admit that I was not looking for a rock at the bottom of the ridge when I did the hike but for some sort of scenic vista. However, this is a heavily wooded trail, and all views of the surrounding mountains and the valley where the rock must be have long been obliterated, so you won’t see anything other than the forest. I suggest avoiding this pointless trail, and this stop for that matter, unless you need to use its one picnic table.
