DINING AND PICNICKING

Statue of Liberty National Monument has cafés on both Liberty and Ellis islands, and snacks can be purchased on the ferry. Both cafés serve a similar menu and have indoor and outdoor seating (a lot more outdoors). The menu consists of sandwiches, burgers, pizza, and other typical lunchtime fare. Prices for most entrées are around $10. Once you add in a drink and a possible side item or desert, plan to spend $15 to $20 per adult and around $10 to $15 per kid (there is a kid’s menu with items below the $10 average). There are separate ice cream stands on both islands.

Visitors to the park are also welcome to bring their own food and non-alcoholic drinks in a small handbag or standard-size backpack. No coolers are allowed on the ferry. The tables located at the cafés are open to everyone, not just café patrons.

SOUVENIRS

There are two gift stores on Liberty Island. The National Park Service’s Museum Shop caters to those wanting National Park-related gifts, books, and souvenirs for Statue of Liberty National Monument. This is located in the same building as the Crown Café, but you can’t get to it from within the café. The front entrance is on the main walkway leading from the ferry dock.

The largest gift store, located in a separate building next to the café, sells just about anything anyone ever dreamed up with the Statue of Liberty on it. This is where you can get items such as goofy foam Statue of Liberty crown hats and other gifts that appeal to discerning guests with good taste.

The gift store on Ellis Island is located just inside the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration. This is similar to the Museum Shop on Liberty Island. I suppose immigrant kitsch hasn’t quite caught on like Statue of Liberty kitsch.
